Conflict/Resolution

Brian's Survival

Author’s Note: This is my piece analyzing the main conflict in the book Hatchet and how the conflict gets resolved.

On a plane to Canada, to visit his father, Brian notices the pilot has just died of a heart attack. After he survives a horrible plane crash, he ends up in the wilderness all alone by himself. Brian encounters some very dangerous life threatening situations including hunger, but the most frightening one is a tornado. I think this is a Person versus Nature type of conflict because it’s a battle between Brian and the wilderness. Brian is the person battling against nature, which is the wilderness in this case. He’s trying to escape his situation, but unfortunately there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel. This is the main conflict in the story.

The way the conflict gets resolved is Brian finds an emergency locator inside the plane that crashed. He uses it and gets surprised by a plane coming to rescue him. I think this is the resolution to the conflict because it’s how the battle in the story got resolved, meaning who won the battle. The conflict in this book is similar to the book Under a War Torn Sky with Henry. Henry is struggling to survive and get back to his loved ones. Also the conflict is related to the book Touching Spirit Bear with Cole. Cole is also trying to survive in the wilderness. So this conflict in Hatchet is very common in a lot of other stories too.
