The Definition of a Captain

The Definition of a Captain

Author's Note: This is a theme essay analyzing why determination is a major theme in the novel " The Big Field".

Wiping his glove in the filthy dirt, Hutch was ready to deliver. You could sense the determination around him. He had that look, the one of a true baseball player.
Everyone knew Hutch was always a good ball player, but what they always will remember about him is the level of determination he brought to his team. Determination is the main theme in the book The Big Field . It's the message I know the author is trying to convey throughout the story and teach the readers something that's important with a purpose.

Hutch has shown his dedication to the game of baseball throughout the story. He has good sportsmanship which adds to the many benefits of having him on the field every game. He's shown his value to the team especially his teammates.  He is determined to be that guy people remember for making that huge play. Again, determination is a major theme in the story.

In addition, on the very first page of the book, the narrator introduced Hutch. Here is what he said about Hutch: " If the ball was in play, he always wanted it to be his play". That statement right there clearly shows Hutch wants to be the captain or leader for his team and is resolved to not changing it anytime soon. He wants to win the championship and that's never going to change. I can't envision his team winning the state championship without Hutch. He brings that type of importance.  He is truly remarkable. With the kind of presence he brings, he's got the other teams scratching their heads about what level of competition they are against.

While I enjoyed listening to the many benefits of having on the field, what fascinated me was that in one substantial game, sure enough, Hutch did make a huge play late in a game. He was playing shortstop at the time, got a weak hit grounder hit to him and fired a canon over towards first for the final out to seal the game. He was full of excitement because after that victory, his team advanced to the Regionals, one round closer to the state finals.

Determination is used as a theme in many other stories as well including Touching Spirit Bear . The main character Cole, is determined to escape from his hair-raising situations. Determined to survive and determined to find rescue. Cole has the labor to keep trying to find a solution. He is the definition of a true warrior.

I can relate the theme determination to a book. The book Touching Spirit Bear sort of has some of the signs of determination. The main character Cole is determined and trying to survive by himself alone in the wilderness. Cole is determined to do anything possible to keep him alive. Even though, he is being attacked by wild animals and struggling to get food and water. Cole and Hutch have determination in them like nobody else.

I can also relate this theme to real life with Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB). Derek Jeter got his nickname " The Captain" because he is definitely the leader of his team, is clearly glad to be and well deserves the honor for his efforts. Him and Hutch's determination is at such a high level, that they give their teams confidence to win every game when they're on the field.

Competing for a championship in sports, striving to accomplish something while putting maximum effort is all the same thing as determination. Determination is not only a common theme in stories, but also in real life too.
